Hi all,
My '93 Sentra XE (bought new) has given me faithful service over the
years, and it's time for me to return some of that . I've got LOTS of
questions about CV joints, headliner, fuel mileage, etc.
Here's one I hope will be easy: How do I get the driver's side wiper arm
OFF the stud. Not the blade, the whole wiper arm. I can wrestle the
other one off, but I've tried WD-40, a cushioned pry bar, tapping,
banging, and NOTHING has convinced the driver's side to let go!
Without breaking the windshield, I mean. A battery terminal puller
might work, but it's about $21 I'd rather keep.
Once they're off, I'm gonna wire brush them and spray on a coat of black
satin finish. The car has very low miles, and it's worth it to me to try
to make it look good again.
Thanks,
JPM

Not sure about the '93, but some of the Nissan arms have a plastic cover
hiding a nut underneath.

You will probably need a puller. Check with Autozone, if you have one
in your area. They will loan you one. Just pay a deposit and you get it
back when the tool is returned. While you have the arms off, you might
want to check the linkages that move the arms. I have had to replace
them on a '91 and my '92. The plastic ball sockets wear out, pop apart,
and will leave you with no wipers at the most inopportune time. Both of
mine came apart in the winter when the wipers froze.

Yeah, it hasn't been easy to find a puller anywhere.
Thanks for warning me about possible problems with the wiper arm
linkages. There are a lot of things on the car needing attention, and
It's about time I gave it a thorough going-over.

The wiper arms on mine are metal, with the nut beneath a pop-off cover.
The trouble is, the driver's side doesn't *need* a fastener -- it's
already on there fast enough!

I don't have any tips on how to do it, just how NOT to... be very careful
when trying to get the arm off; I tried on my 94 Altima and ended up needing
a new windshield... and STILL didn't get the damn thing off :)

Then just sand them in place and mask/paint them where they are!

I did that once using Rustoleum. Most of the paint damage was on the top
anyway.
