I have a '92 Sentra, 1.6L, 4spd auto with 240,000 miles. I don't have any problems with the tranny but the fluid looks brown. I was going to change the fluid and filter myself but I know half the old fluid is left in the torque converter. Jiffy Lube and some others offer a service which flushes all the old fluid, including the torque converter but they don't change the filter. Which would be better or does it need to be done at all? It doesn't have real filter. With those miles there's a chance that either will cause it to fail. Less likely with the partial change. Crud that might be minding its own business lying around in there might become dislodged and move to places where it can cause problems. The prescribed method in the Nissan service manuals is to drain it and refill with the same amount that comes out. Drive the car to circulate the new fluid; check the condition of the fluid; drain and fill again; repeat until it takes on the color of the new fluid. Three times should do it. You probably should change the filter when you do the third fluid change. |
