my mechanic is charging 900$ to replace the rotors and hub ring on my
front wheels of a 1999 Infiniti I-30. do u think, his estimate is
genuine. i am guessing, he is fleecing me. also, he says when the hub
ring is broken, my car is in danger, since the wheel can come out
anytime. is this a true statement
thanks,

I had a rt. front wheel bearing go out on my 95, but after 3 failed
attempts to get the dealer to look at it (even when I told them the that
wheel was loose) I had to get it fixed by an independent garage. They
were going to replace the wheel bearing, but it had gone so long that the
bearing had eaten into the hub, so they had to replace the whole hub
assembly. That was a long time ago, so I forget the cost, but I
doubt if it is an easy do it yourself job.
How many miles are on your car that it needs rotors? I typically replace
front pads myself every 30k mi and replaced front rotors at about 90k
miles. But that was just because they were heat checked from frequent high
speed autocross on a race track. It is just a wild guess that a front
brake job with new rotors would be somewhere either side of $450.
Rear brake pads and rotors are usually not needed until your parking brake
cable seizes and drags them too long.
So it the hub is a couple hundred dollars plus labor, the whole price may
be reasonable.
