When I start the van and turn the heater on it begins to smell like gas
really bad, I notice it more when the heat is on. What could this be?

Could be an exhaust gasket or intake gasket leak.  Are there any other odors
like burnt oil or coolant to go with it? That will tell you which one it
would be.  I take it that it dissappears when you start moving?

Hi
I also have a similar problem with my 94 Quest. It happens when the
temperature drops below minus 15 Degrees Celsius. ( I am in Ontario,
Canada.) But the smell goes away when the engine warms up. It doesn't seem
to have anything to do with the heater though, but I am not sure of this,
since my heater is always ON during the winter months.

I had this happen on my 94 Altima.  I looked under the hood and noticed some
leakage and swelling at the end of the fuel line running into the fuel rail.
I replaced the line and the smell went away.  The gas fumes are probably
just getting sucked into the cabin by the blower and the hot air intensifies
the smell.

Hope that helps,
