2001 Nissan Sentra Starter problem

What would cause a starter motor to spin, but not engage the motor and
not stop?  To try to make it a bit more clear if the battery terminal
is hooked up the starter motor spins, whether the key is in or not.

Bad solenoid. Probably easiest to just put in a rebuilt starter.
