2004 Quest, of course. CD's sound great, but FM sounds horrible and always
has. The "ST" stereo indicator is displayed but it is most obviously in
mono. I rarely if ever listen to the radio, but I am thinking of using an
FM transmitter for my iPod. I suspect it will sound pretty bad. Other than
upgrading the stereo is there any way to fix this?

Bring it back to your Nissan dealer. Known issue and TSB has been issued
for a long time. They will replace the radio.

I looked up the service bulletin (NTB04-087) and it's for a Quest SL w/ nav.
My SL does not have nav. Also the stereo is a Panasonic with 6-CD changer.
I think mine is a Clarion. I mentioned it to the dealer and he said that's
just the way it is (which I seriously doubt). There is a huge difference in
sound quality between CD and FM. The FM literally sounds like AM...

I've had the same problem with bith a 94 and 99 Altima, both with
aftermarket decks. I don't know if the "diversity" antenna setup just
doesn't work that well or what, but most FM stations usually flicker back &
forth between mono and stereo a fair bit. Maybe the antenna adaptor for the
diversity connector is part of the problem?
