2001 Sentra GXE  wont  start.  Battery is good but it appears (?) that
starter does not kick in.  What really confuses me is that I started car
with a jumper (in a  mall parking lot) drove home. Car would not start
again so I jumped it again  from another car. Old battery was
disconnected when I did this. Car started I put a new battery in the
car and the same old problem occurred..wont start.  Dash board lights,
head lights, and interior lights are OK.  I do get a service engine soon
light and when I try to start car it sounds like a relay is clicking by
the window shield or in the dash.  I am guessing but I suspect its a
relay but how could I start the car before ?.  Words of wisdom would be
greatly appreciated.  It also looks like I have a 5 year old battery for
sell ..humor.

Turn the dome light on and try to start the car. Does the light stay
brightly lit or does it dim?

Just tried your suggestion.  Dome light starts bright but went I try and
start it become very dim.  Instrument panel also becomes dim. I still
hear this strange noise from under the dash ? It sounds like click,
click....click and then it stops (I think).

Your battery is dead or you have a bad connection. I suspect your
alternator is bad and your new battery ran down because it wasn't
charging. Make sure the belt on your alt is OK.

Well in keeping with sharing information this is what I think is going on.

1. Short in old battery (not checked yet) occurred at mall.
2. Jumper car drove home.
3. disconnected old battery and jumped Sentra from another battery and
car started.
4.  Purchased new battery and installed in Sentra car would not start.
5. Repeated step 3 except disconnect new battery
6. steps 1-5 says to me that electrical  circuits must be OK
7. Does this mean that new battery is not fully charged ?...I think so
but it strange if its so.
8. Put battery on small charger in deep cycle mode.  five or six hours
and  new battery should be ready to try again.

The latest update.
    9.  Tried new battery after all night charging but it would not
start car.
  10.   Returned new battery and got another.
   11.  This battery also did not start car.  I jumped it and start car
and let it run for  about 30 minutes.
   12.  Turned car off and it started  when I tried...success at last.
   13.  Will  know for sure in the morning.
   14.  So basically the problem was orginal battery went bad...1st new
battery was bad and 2nd new battery had to be charged (setting on the
shelf too long
           ?).
    15.   If all works I will not post again.

Most likely, you have a bad battery, and or defective alternator, and or
starter, and or some bad connections. The most common causes are the battery
and the alternator.

If the alternator is defective, this can also damage the battery.
