I am hooking up an extra cigarette lighter socket in my center console
for a cellphone.  The OE cigarette lighter has a 15 amp fuse. What size
wire should I use to hook up the extra socket. I have 18 gauge wire
handy. Is that able to hold more amps than a 15 amp fuse, or should I
get a heavier wire? Thanks.

The only answer is to use the same gauge as the wire you are splicing
into, or bigger.

A 15A fuse supports a 20Ga wire or larger (18Ga), but never smaller.
Bigger wire may have difficulty crimping onto the cigarette lighter
outlet depending on design.  Also splicing different gauge wires can be
tricky.

to be more specific, 15A automotive mini fuses that are the size of a
fingernail and located in the passenger compartment typically use 20Ga wire.

OK. I used the 18 ga. wire. I should have been more specific. The OE
cigarette lighter is in the dash next to the ashtray. The new lighter
socket was installed in the console between the seats. It will only be
used for the cellphone. I found a good ground under the center console
and just ran the pos. (Red) wire under the carpet and then under the
inside door sill wire channel up to the fuse box and tapped into the 15A
fuse there. All is well and working. Thanks.
