I have a 91 Altima with 120K on the odometer. It runs great and has all
it's factory recommended services done over the years I've owned it.
Yesterday I found out I have to travel to Mississippi from Illinois on
Friday. Yesterday the "Service Engine" light came on. Perfect timing! I
can't get the car into the dealer and the few mechanics around here that
work on "foreign cars" can't look at it until Friday or Monday.
Can I drive the car without damaging anything? I will be gone, and
driving the car for 2 - 3 weeks until I get back to Illinois.

As long as it's not flashing you should be fine.

... but you may as well do the obvious, like check oil level!

I check ALL the fluid levels religiously. Quick way to the junk yard is
to make sure your oil, trans fluid, coolant or brake fluid is low! Every
time I gas up I check oil, trans and brake fluid levels. I'm one of those
people who get strange looks from other drivers who just put gas in their
cars and go. I've even been asked a few times, "Why are you fooling around
with your motor?" DUH!!!
Oil gets changed every 3 months or 3K, what ever comes first, trans fluid
every 12K, brake fluid replaced every 24K, coolant replaced and cooling
system back flushed every year. I might be a bit "anal" with this stuff but
my cars run like a top, don't burn a drop of oil or leak any fluids.
I was just concerned about the "Service Engine" light coming on since
it's never gone on since I bought the car new back in 91. Long as I know
it's not going to damage anything I won't worry about it. What's the
difference if it's flashing or not?

Not a clue!

It's obvious you look after your car.  I had no idea of that at the time
I wrote.

Sorry I can't help further.

Make sure that the gas cap is on tight. Check the fluid levels, and add or
change as necessary.  Change the gas filter, and air filter. Disconnect the
battery for about 1 minute, and reconnect it to reset the computer.  If the
light still comes on, then the car will need the proper diagnostics, because
there is most likely something wrong.

Take it to Autozone.  As the counter person to check the code.  They
will read it for free and tell you what the problem is.  If it's just
your gas cap, they will turn off the light for you.

'91 is not OBD-II.  That comes in in 95-96 for most cars.  Unlikely AutoZone
will be able to read it.

is the light orange/yellow or red?  If it's not red, don't worry about
it.  Just get it checked when you get back.  The yellow light just
means something in your emissions system isn't playing nice.  If it's
RED, STOP DO NOT PASS GO.  DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR.  You risk
serious, possibly irrepairable, damage to your engine.

Also, a code reader will NOT tell you what is wrong.  It will only
tell you what is *affected*.  It still takes a good technician to
troubleshoot the problem.

If it's yellow, just about any full service station can run the code
for you.  But like I said, if it's yellow (or orange in some cars),
the world isn't going to end if you drive the car with the light on.

Don't worry about it.  If you were low on oil - the dash would tell
you -ditto for the brakes and overheat.  If a sensor or module went bad, the
computer puts the system in "failsafe", which will keep your car healthy.  I
have been driving with a service lite for six months--runs the same as it
ever did-Great.
