RPM/Spedometer Dial's and Trasmission related?

I drive a 1993 Nissan Altima that so far has been driving well. Since
about 2 weeks ago, I noticed the RPM and Spedometer Dial's do not work
and subsequently the battery dies out.

We thought it was a alternator problem and replaced it. Now the battery
charges to 12V but the RPM and Spedometer dials do not work. The
transmission does not shift smoothly as well.

My question is - Is the transmission not shifting and the RPM and
spedometer dials not working related? If so, can anyone on this usenet
group suggest some alternatives. My mechanic is all baffled.

Thanks
