my nissan pathfinder hits 100K, so while at the store i was buying the usual
10-30 motor oil when the dude said that since i have 100K, i should switch
to 10-40. is that a good advice? and to 10-50 at 110K? its pretty cold where
i live, around 30's at night but the car is park in the garages.

Use what the owner's manual says, not what some parts store dude says.

Back in the old days when I drove Ford's and Chevy's with close to or
over a hundred thousand on them I'd always run 20w50 in them.

It was a philosophy that worked well on those sloppy, loose tolerance
engines.

I'd stick with the manual on the new, high tech engines.

Parts store dudes aren't mechanics or they wouldn't be working there.

Consider 10W-30 synthetic vice fossil oil. I have 110K on my 1999 Nissan
Quest. I only use Amsoil 10W-30 Synthetic, and change the oil every 7500
miles. At 100K I had the plugs and timing belt replaced. The mechanic said
the compression was as good as new and no visible wear/tear.
Good luck.

I have 210K on my '97 Maxima using nothing but Walmart "Tech" oil and
cheap Fram filters changed every 6-8K. Therefore, "Tech" must be better
than Amsoil!

You don't really mean that Jim, but I'm glad to hear a good report about
Walmart "Tech" oil
and cheap Fram filters. I have no issue with either. I prefer the piece of
mind of using superior oil, and
all the independent researchers will tell u:
1. Synthetic is superior in application that conventional oil.
2. Amsoil is the best synthetic oil on the market.

I have 78K on my 2000 Ranger and all I use in it is Valvoline fossil 5W-30
with a Motorcraft filter,
still running strong.

Is "Tech" oil better than Amsoil? It's not a performance issue, it's a
comfort issue.
Is "Tech" oil a better oil tested in laboratory conditions than Amsoil,
absolutely not - again, read the research.

Does your car engine care what oil u pour in it, as long as that oil meets
manufacturer specs? Probably not.
But then again, u can apply that same analogy to almost any consumer
product.

Does your eyeball care if you're watching a t.v. program on a quality CRT
t.v. or would it prefer a plasma?
Probably not, so why waste good $ on an overpriced product?

Does your body care what nutritional foods you consume as long as the body
can process it? Probably not,
so why buy name brand.  And since u shop at Walmart (and so do I), Wally's
brand of groceries, Great Value,
is as nutritional as any name brand, so why by name brand?

Cheap Ivory soap removes the daily dirt as good as Dove soap. Generic
toothpaste is as good as Crest.
And the PC you're using is probably a name brand, when u could have
assembled the thing yourself at
a much cheaper price.  These questions are easy Jim, because it's a matter
of choice. :-)

I would double check everything a parts guy says, and don't believe
ANYTHING a tire guy tells you!  I've never seen more incompetence than at
tire shops!

It's bad advice. Keep using what's recommended.
