Which 4x4?  (Which gallon for that matter? - US gallon is smaller than
the rest of the world)

For some models that's actually *good* for others it's dreadful.

A few basic tips for better gas mileage.

Proper tire inflation.
The Air and fuel filter to be clean.
The spark plugs to be changed if worn, or past their due mileage.
Avoid fast starts, and hard acceleration.
When city driving, try to synchronize as best possible with the traffic
lights.
Use synthetic oil.

With some models of cars and trucks, using high test or super fuel will
increase the fuel economy. Even with the cost difference, the improvement
can be great enough to warrant the extra cost.

Four wheel drive isn't the most fuel efficient idea in the world
either...  Do much offroading? or just one of those fellas that needs a
truck for ego's sake?

My 97 4x4 gets 15-16 around town (with Warn hubs locked, but not shifted
in 4 wheel drive).

My terrano (pathfinder) probably uses more litres per km, but at the end
of the day it uses the same dollars including road tax as a toyoya
caldina station wagon.
