My 96 Sentra 1.6 with manual transmission makes a whirring/humming
noise between around 20-50 mph.  The noise is most prounounced when
accelerating, though it can be heard faintly when coasting in certain
speed ranges.  It appears to be orignating in the front end from the
half axles or transmission.  This noise has been ongoing for almost a
year and performance doesn't seem affected.  I just need some direction
on what could be causing this to prevent any serious problems down the
road.

Thanks for any input.

I had a noise something like what you are describing, but on a different
type of car. It ended up being the throw bearing for the clutch.  On another
car, I had a sort of humming noise in a particular range of speed. This one
turned out to be a bad gear in the transmission. This car also had a manual
transmission.

Sit with your car running, in neutral, and standing still. The radio's
off, windows closed etc. Push and release the clutch pedal. Does that
same noise come and go? If so, then it's the throwout bearing. Time and
use have thrown it out of wack. Best thing is to leave it until the next
clutch change, or if it gets severe, replace it AND the clutch since you
need to do open heart surgery on the tranny just to get to the bearing,
and you may as well replace the clutch as well.
