HI
I have a very old nissan micra, don't use often and for very short journeys
only, last week passed MOT, but when I drive it after about 5 minutes get
very strong smell of burning if I turn engine off for a few minutes and
start it again it goes away, Mechanic said could be where it stands
overnight and maybe bit of oil heats up and then disperses that is why smell
comes then goes without me doing anything, but it frightens me and thinking
if getting rid of car, it is not the heating doing this, would be grateful
for any advice.

thankyou all

regards

What kind of burning?  Oil?  Plastic?  Paper?

There are a whole bunch of things.  Judging by the Micra my wife used to
have, the most likely things are the clutch beginning to slip, or it's
burning some oil.

It's worth getting a trained nose at it.  It may be something trivial,
like rubbish caught around the exhaust manifold!

Thankyou for answering me Andy, not sure is smell is paper, plactis or
whatever! but I have been having trouble with my clutch. especially 1st to
second gear sometimes it takes ages before I can get it into second, think
this may be the problem, thankyou so much did not see the connection but as
I was reading your reply, it made sense.
take care

You should get a properly qualified mechanic to look for the fault.
Sometimes a slipping clutch can make a burning smell. If you have a
leak, and if there is some dripping on to a hot surface, this can cause
a smell.
