Advice please.      With these could tempretures this morning my
offside rear wheeel was frozen and the ABS warning light came on. I
drove slowly avioding main roads and then stopped, switched of and
restarted the engine and the ABS light stayed off and I drove to work
and as I drove the brakes continued to become freerer. When I got to
work the wheel was warmer than the other four. Question .  Am I likly
to have done any damage that needs  a gargae to look at or is this a
normal course of event with frozen wheels and what should I have done
different ?     Thanks for any advice .

More than likely, it is a frozen hand (emergency) brake cable or
mechanism in that wheel. It could be frozen by the extreme cold, or
frozen by rust or wear. Either way, the brake heat freed it up somewhat.
Take it to your mechanic and have him/her check it out.

Thanks Bill.  Did just that and had a full service at the same time. no
signs of and damage so just frozen with extream cold. Will have to park
in a more sheltered location.    Thanks   Ray.

Your welcome.
It most likely will happen when it is raining out or when going through
a puddle just before you park the vehicle. Then, before the water
evaporates from the brakes, you apply the hand brake and then let it sit
overnight in freezing temperatures. If you have trouble opening the door
because of the weatherstripping freezing to the door frame, you may have
the brake trouble too.
If I remember when that may be a possibility, I try to park level and
leave it in gear rather than using the hand brake. Most times I forget.
I had a similar problem with one of the rear brakes which wouldn't
release. It would release enough after a few hundred feet. Mine was due
to a rusty/dirty hand brake mechanism in the drum (this was in warm
weather). I parked in gear wherever I parked it until I had it fixed
after the weekend.
