Hi,
This is about a 96 Sentra 1.6 Liter engine with 170,000 miles.
I've been getting a loud rattling sound from the engine in all
gears, at high rpm's and light throttle, which started about 6 months
ago. For ex, if Ii put it in first gear (it's automatic) and take it up
to 20 mph, it won't rattle until I back off the gas and just give it
light throttle. Then it rattles loudly until I give it more gas or let
off the gas completely. Does the same thing in 2nd gear, but at around
35 mph or so. The rattle sound is like a chain rubbing against metal,
or the teeth of a gear rubbing on something. Like the classic card in
the bicycle spokes, but at a higher rate. Like a loud buzzing.
The engine is often noisy at idle too, usually, but sometimes it nice
and quiet at idle, for no obvious reason. The noise at idle is a
clacking from the head, but not the buzzing sound. The clacking
continues when you put it in gear and step on the gas, but after the
rpms get up a bit, the clacking goes away. Sometimes the engine is
quiet except for some low level valve noise, both when idling or
driving. Other times very clacky.
Oil pressure light comes on when hot, idling in drive, sometimes. I'm
going to switch to a heavier oil, to see what that does. Been using
10w-30. Change oil every 4 to 7 K miles.
The buzzing is a different noise from the clacking, and I'm guessing
they are two different problems. The buzzing is always available, if I
drive it the 'right' way, but the clacking comes and goes.
Worn bearings ? Rods? Any ideas?
Thanks

I can't keep up with which ones have chains and which have belts, but this
sounds like might be a bad chain? Could be a bad chain AND rod bearings.
It's ussually cheaper to just replace the engine with a lower mile used on
when this sort of wear has happened as it sounds like it could have noisy
lifters as well....

If you oil pressure light comes on, you may have found the problem to
most of your engine noises. Try having the oil pressure measured so you
eliminate a defective pressure switch as the problem.
If the pressure is out of specs, your problem can be excesive engine
wear, or a weak oil pump.
If the car uses hydraulic valve lash adjusters, they become noisy when
there is not enough oil pressure, same goes for chain tensioners if your
car uses a chain.
Have you tried changing the brand of oil filter you use? Not oil
filters are the same and many common brands are known to restric oil
filter due to reduced filtering media area.
Have you tried using thicker oil 15W40, 20W50?
I think you have eliminated the exhaust pipe or shields as the cause for
the noise when driving the car.
Good luck.

It's definitely a chain: GA16DE motor. I have the same engine in my 99
Sentra. As for thicker oil advise, 10W30 is the thickest recommended by
Nissan. Wouldn't thicker oil just make the pump work harder
unecessarily, and not really help in delivering oil all over the motor?
SentraMench, you're not using Purolator PUREONE oil filters are you?
There have been suggestions that PUREONE's very thick filter media might
cause oil starvation in some engines.

No, I'm using MotorCraft FL839. And guess what I just found ???
The oil filter bypass valve (on the filter mounting assy, not on the
filter itself) is broken off, and the bypass tract is always open !!
I'm going to post about it now as a new topic.

Nope, its the pressure that's the problem, thicker oil will give higher
pressure.
