Is it possible to substitute another steering wheel on a car that has an
airbag? Does it have to be from a car of the same manuf.? Same model?
I'd like a leather steering wheel, but the truck model I'm thinking of
getting didn't offer it. However, I think the SUV of the same maker did,
and/or later years of that model did.
I guess the real question is are airbag steering wheels self contained,
just needing to be powered, or is the impact sensor located somewhere
else. If it is, is the signal it sends to deploy the airbag standardized,
at least amoung manufs.? If that's true, how do you make sure which
models/years are compatible.
Anyway, I'm hoping somebody out there in cyberspace is knowledgible enough
on this to know :)
TIA

The airbag system is not self contained. It consists of impact sensors, a computer, and airbags. The airbag from another vehicle from the same manufacturer will probably work. You could verify this by there technical manuals, or see if it is the same part number. If an airbag is not compatible the computer will give you a fault when you plug it in.
