I have an 87 Maxima with 62K miles with an engine whine which I can't
find. The whine happens at any speed above idle and increases with
engine speed. Other than this the car runs fine except for fast idle
that does not work which is probably a bad air regulator. I have
checked the power steering pump, the water pump, alternator, both idler
pulleys, and AC unit . Using stethoscope I have checked the T-belt at
the cams and the tensioner pulley, and then also checked the
distributor shaft and oil pan. Is there anything I missed or anything
that is specific to this year Max that I missed?

Pull the drive belts, if it's still there someone installed the T-belt too
tight.
