Help with baffling Pathfinder electrical problem?

My 1994 Pathfinder has a baffling electrical problem. When we
close the doors, the dome light sometimes remains on, as do
the courtesy lights in the driver and passenger footwells. These
lights may also come on intemittently as we drive, sometimes
associated with going over a little bump, and then they might go
off, just as inexplicably.

When we open any door, those lights are on with full intensity.
When all doors are closed, they dim to half-intensity (odd). On
occasion, closing a door made all the lights go out.

I thought I had it narrowed down to the switch at the rear
driver's side door, because closing that door sometimes made the
lights go out as they should. So I removed the switch, and at
first it did the trick. But after a few door closings the lights
again remained on. It was clear the problem hadn't gone away.

I still suspect that the door from which I removed the switch
may be part of the problem, because closing it still +can+
sometimes make the lights go out.

When do you think the problem is? (a) Is there another switch
in this door mechanism that I'm missing, or (b) could it be a
defect in the end of the wire that used to plug into the now-gone
switch? Thanks in advance.

Check your rear hatch. This is a common problem where the switch becomes
worn or misaligned. I have to keep reclosing my hatch to get the lights to
shut off. Sometimes I can just push on the hatch to get them to go off.
There is a fix where you add some washers under the (non-hatch) latch. I've
had a few mornings where the battery is dead if I forgot to check the hatch.

I also get the intermittent lights while driving.

Thanks, DS, I'll check the rear hatch.

One question: how could it be that the rear driver's side door
seems to be involved? Shutting it can make the lights go off.

Shutting that door bounces the car.

If leaving the dome light on all night flattens the battery, you need a new battery.

On my 91 sentra there are two switches on each door, the door jamb
one that controls the dome light and the indicator on the dash and
there is another built into the latch that controls the automatic
seatbelts fyi
