Sentra gas pressure / flooding engine

Hello all;

I am trying to diagnose a perplexing problem with my '89 Sentra where
the engine has been flooding with gas each time I try to start the car.
I've used a Fuel Pressure gauge and registered 46 psi in the fuel line
leading into the throttle body assembly. The shop manual indicates an
'89 Sentra with the GA16i engine and federal emissions and manual
transaxle should have no higher than 32 psi.  Additionally each time I
try to run the car, the gas tank fills with pressure and lets out a
significant hiss if I unscrew the gas cap.

What could be causing all of this? What simple things can I rule out
right away and has anyone else had this same kind of problem.

Thanks to anyone with any help you can offer.

Was the fuel pump replaced?

Is the ignition working correctly at the time of starting the engine?

Did you measure the pressure using a t adaptor or just hooking the gage
to the end of the gas line?

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator?  Is this vehicle equipped
with one?

Thanks for replying;

fuel pump was not replaced ... since I own it anyway.

ignition is working correctly, initially thought this was the problem,
so there is new cap, wires, rotor, plugs!

Measured the pressure with a T-adaptor

There is a pressure regulator, I haven't swapped it out in any attempt
to rule this out yet.

But why is the gas tank pressurizing? Someone has suggested a blocked
or kinked return line. What do you think?
