First of all, does anyone know what could cause a cam to break?
Secondly, where can I get a camshaft and probably some other parts for
less than the dealer price. I also have an opportunity to buy a used 97
engine but I am getting conflicting information as to whether it will
work in the 96. Anyone know what might be different?

How very odd!
Recently, I had my 99 LE in to have some work done at the dealership.
They replaced the waterpump changed the oil and some other stuff.
When they started the motor, it ran for 20 seconds and the cam broke.
at the end.
This truck only had 120000km on it and is serviced regularly.
Service advisor seems to feel he is seeing a trend developing with this
motor.

No, I believe he could be right. I was very lucky to find a motor for
mine because all the junkyards said people are constantly looking for
them.
