I have a 1987 Nissan hardbody that the brake lights will not go off unless
I unplug the brake switch that is next to the brake pedal. I replaced it
and they still will not go off. I even just plugged it in without actuall
installing and still can not get light to go off. What else can I check?

there should be a little rubber bumper that attaches to the brake pedal
arm where the brake switch is. It is common for these to get brittle and
fall off, if it isn't in place the brake switch plunger won't depress
and the lights will stay on. Also if this is a manual transmission there
will be one on the clutch pedal arm that will be used for the cruise
control (if you have that), if that one is missing the cruise control
won't engage.

I remember a plastic piece falling in my floorboard that resembled a
button. I thought it was just an old piece of plastic. Can that be
replaced or is there something else I can do to fix it? I didn't throw it
away,it is still in the floorboard. I didn't see where it came from so
that would help also if you could tell me that. I do all the work on my
truck so some things I am still learning about.

That would be the piece. It is a cheap replacement item (got mine at the
dealer, don't know if parts houses would have them or not). They just
pop into a hole that is in line with the brake switch that you were
messing with. They will have a little nipple (nub, with a flared end)
that you push into that hole and lock into place. If you have a manual
transmission with cruise control replace that one at the same time,
because if it hasn't fallen off yet it soon will.

Thank you so much for all your help!!!! I have been unplugging it the last
2 days and it has been a pain in the rear(or should I say the knees and
back). I didn't have this much trouble when I replaced the alternator.
Everything on this truck is the original part,so things don't come off
very easy after rusting on there for 19 years. The headlight literally
fell apart when I replaced them.

Thanks again for your help. Some of us women can do more than just put gas
in and turn the key.:-)

Your welcome. What is easier until you get the part is o unplug the fuse
for the brake lights. I know about stuff getting brittle and breaking, I
still have my 84 300zx as a daily driver.

I got the part, now I just have to put it in . My truck  is a 1987 and only
has 65,000 miles on it,so I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.
Everything is the original part except the maintenance stuff of course.

Yeah, that little peice fell out on my clutch on my 91 sentra, had to
curl up under the dash just to start the car!!!, I went ghetto and
simply taped a penny over the whole that the little piece of rubber
goes in, works like a charm, that fix happened about a year ago, no
problems since.

A penny? I feel ripped off! My repair cost a nickle.
