I recently had a bad experience with my local Nissan dealership, yes you
guessed it they left the oil filler cap off. After approx five days driving
I experienced total power loss, then I pulled in and found that the filler
cap was lying on top of the intercooler (Nissan Navara 2.5DI) and the dip
stick completely clean. I had the vehicle recovered to the dealership where
I normally get it serviced, anyway cutting a long story short they are
claiming that they are not responsible and said that I should have smelt,
seen or heard something and it would not have covered 569 miles since its
service. Needless to say I was completely oblivious to what was going on
under the bonnet, I wound'nt expect any problems since I had it serviced so
recently.

Has anyone on the group had any similar experience and if so I would be
grateful if you can you tell me if you were aware that anything was wrong
and what sort of distance did your vehicle travel before grinding to a halt.
(make and model appreciated)

Thanks in advance

Ken,
find the local CAB (http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/) and ask them,
also trading standards at the local council.

Good luck

My  GF left the oil filler cap off her Saturn.  We got about 150 miles before
she started saying she smelled something.  I never really smelled it, but
she checked, and there was a mess under the hood and it was down about
a quart and a half.  No damage.

You should have had a low oil pressure reading on the gauge or idiot light
or both (if you have both).

I had a Navara Outlaw a few years back with a 2.5 Diesel engine.
When I was going on holiday I did the usual checks under the bonnet and
topped up the oil and like an idiot left the filler cap off.
My oil light came on after about 100 miles and when I stopped the
dipstick was clean but their was still oil left in the sump.( the
dipstick doesn't go right to the bottom).
There was a lot of oily mess but 2 litres of oil got the light off and
it's been fine since.
Not only the oil light but the smell of burning oil was pretty obvious
too.
Hope that helps?
