i have a 2000 nissan sentra se with the 2.0L engine and i have starting
problems. the first time the battery was replaced. the second and
third times the starter was replaced. now we know it wasn't the
battery or the starters. it seems to happen consistantly after the car
sits for more than 24 hours. i suspected it had something to do with
the relays under the hood because when i wouldn't start i would listen
to the engine. after some listening i noticed a click eminating from
the area of the relays on the passenger side of the engine. these
relays relate to the keyless entry etc. we have since replaced the
relays and the car was starting until it sat for more than 24 hrs. now
we are back to square one. when it is running it runs smoothly. i do
not know if the car falls under the sensor recall that can prevent
starting. does anyone have any suggestions of what to check next. the
mechanics are baffled and this problem is going on three months.

I also have a Sentra 2000 and I have a similar problem too. When the car
sits for a while (it used to be 24hrs but now it is even a few hours) I
start the car (with no problem) but then as soon as I put it into drive or
reverse it starts to tremble and there is no throttle power. I give it gas
and it hesitates and I cannot go anywhere. After a few minutes it is fine.
If I start the car and let the engine idle for a minute or two then it does
not do the problem.

Does the car crank but not fire? or does the car refuse to crank? Do
you consistently hear the clicking, even when the car doesn't start?

the car does not crank and there is no clicking from the starter.
almost like a kill switch is engaged

on the second and or third time the starter replaced was it replaced with a
factory OEM part, my guess is no
That is the first place to start

NissTech - good point. I overlooked that detail - and assumed the
starters were all replaced back to back rather that after some period
of time.
In my experience, you have better odds at winning in Vegas than finding
a reliable aftermarket reman starter (and alternator).

while i agree remanufactured alt or starters are not the way to go the
$600 the dealership was charging for the starter would have killed me
especially after proving all three of the starters worked fine. in
fact the cost of the third starter (a nissan starter)was refunded since
we determined it was not the problem. the starters were replaced back
to back (within a month three starters). the problem seems to be
originating at the relay box (passenger side) in the engine compartment
(trunk open inhibitor). i can hear the relay click when the car will
start and it will not click when the car won't start. the mechanics
found a broken ground wire and replaced the wire. the car started for
a couple of days but after it sat for almost 24 hours it wouldn't
start. i pressed on the relay and heard the click then voila the car
started. when the car sits for ~24 hours it will not start. it will
not crank at all. i don't think there is a conection between the relay
and the starter but i do think there is a conection between the relay
and the alarm. this problem screams electrical. any help you can
provide is greatly appreciated not only by me but by the garage of
people who have run out of ideas.

Has the garage investigated either the ignition switch or replaced the
ignition relay? There are a variety of conditions that must be met for
a car to turn over, including for an automatic - the park-interlock (or
whatever it's called)) switch.
When a starter goes bad, you sometimes hear absolutely nothing... as
was the case for me. Giving mine a tap with a wood block would
sometimes free it up and get me one more start.
Where did you price 600 dollars for an OEM starter? or was that quotes
for parts/labor?

$595 parts and labor from our nissan dealer. they did check the
park-interlock "switch" but that was ok. they also checked the
ignition relay but it was ok as well. they replaced a second ground
wire yesterday and the car started all day. obviously we hoping this
cures the problem but we shall see. it hasn't been parked for 24 hours
yet. i will keep posting if the problem occurs again.
