I have a 1988 Sentra and to make a long story short, I need a new motor. I'd
like to find a good used motor. (I missed an 88 that had been rearended for
$300). My question is; does it have to be an 88 ?? Surely there would be
other years that would fit. I found an 1990 with 60k on it for $400 (BAD
hail damage) but don't know if it'll fit. This is not at all like the old
smallblock Chevy days !!!
Just curious.
  Thanks

Wow...  A question I can actually answer!

1986 or 1987 thru 1990 or even later are all basically the same...  Only
bodywork changes.

Most important things to consider are whether it's auto, stick, etc.  There
might be slight differences also, but nothing that someone who can instal an
engine can't get around IMHO.

What happened to your engine?  My 1989 went 300,000 miles before rust made
the car unsafe and totaled it...  Engine was perfect.  Original clutch and
battery!!!

Hey Joe, it's been over 4 years but it goes something like this;
I was working out of town (only home one weekend a month) & when I
called home my Wife said the car was almost out of oil & making a funny
noise & spewing oil everywhere. I told her to drive my pickup till I got
home. Seems like it was a sending unit or something, it only cost $20 or so,
anyway everything was back to normal,, I thought. She liked driving the
pickup & didn't drive the car as much so it was a month or so when she
called me & said she had checked & it was low on oil again & that she had
overfilled it "a little" (2 quarts). By the time I got home again it was
making a gawdawful noise & almost no power to even pull itself. It didn't
smoke much but rattled really bad. A cryin shame too cuz it's only got 82939
miles on it. Nice original interior, 2 door, 5 speed, cold air, great tunes,
I've checked with a few places & the parts & labor to rebuild it are way
past what I want to spend, not to mention I don't have a whole lot of metric
tools, just the basics, but enough to do an engine swap I'd think.
I'm sorry for the long post but I definitely appreciate your info, now I
know what to look at for a donor.
   Thanks

P.S. Nice Bike !  I ride an old 79 FLH that I've had forever

Sounds like the interior of the engine tore itself up due to lack of lube..
Bummer.

Pretty cool bike yourself.  Where are you located?  Ride sometime?

Given the subject at hand, I'd make some comment about checking the oil on
the bike due to leakage, but I'll be kind.  <evil grin>

Truth be told...  I could't care less whether someone road a Harley, Boss
Hoss or Vespa clone...  Those who ride get it and those who don't ride
either don't get it or wish they could ride.

Much success with the engine swap!

That's what I was thinkin too, I'll break it down when I get it out & put up
some pics.
And as for leaks on the Bike,, I'll just say that I always carry at least a
quart, (and tools)
I've been thinkin about tryin out some Royal Purple, don't know yet.

That's the first I've heard about anyone buying a motor on ebay but I don't
get
on there as much anymore. I'll keep it in mind tho. I wonder what shipping
would be, those motors are perty small too. I'll have to check it out,
I'm curious now,
I live in a big city & should be able to find one here, I hope

Thanks for the info guys,
I'll keep ya posted on the progress.

Once you find what years will work, look on eBay if you can't find one
local. I know you have to pay shipping but there are a lot of people selling
low mileage engines with guarantees on eBay (With positive feedbacks). Have
a friend reearching a swap for his older Civic. We checked eBay and were
surprised at the number of engines available.
