Could someone please help,
My '98 Sentra Si 1600 suddenly quit revving past 2000.
No matter if I'm in park, neutrual, or in any gear. It is absolutely
fine
until it hits that mark and then all of a sudden it begins to slowly
die and I cannot accelerate (no warning signs appear on the
dashboard),
like it isn't receiving any more fuel.
If I push my clutch in and the revs drop back below the 2000 rpm line
the car continues to run. This problem occurs randomly and without
warning at times which makes it harder to diagnose.
I have checked/changed the following:
-Tested Fuel pump relay and check fuel
-Press check and clean distributor cap
-Rotor treat against moisture check
-Power to fuel pump - took fuel sample
-Checked for water in fuel
Also, I was thinking alternator - but the battery light would be on if
this was the case?
If not that the computer, or something causing the computer to
malfunction as its misreading it/supplying false information?
These problems just started and any info would be greatly appreciated.
I thought it might be important to mention it was rainy weather when
this happened. I dont have much experience with cars :( Im still quite
young and this is the first vehicle I've owned. So please..If its not
too much of an inconvenience would you mind explaining in lamens
terms :D sorry.
Thanks in advance.

It`s not thealternator, and I dont think it`s the ecu. (computer)
My gess woud be the egnishon (sorry about my english) sparkpluggs or the
wires on top of the sparkpluggs (I dont now what it is in english)
It can be clogd fulefilter
It can also be some problems whit a sensor, that`s putting the ecu in
fail-safe-mode, but the engine light would be on.
The last thing I can think of is the catalysator, but then the problem woud
not be randomly.
It is offen eginshon-problems, when they acour in rain.
I hope you understand some of the tings I`m trying to right.

Sounds like failsafe mode, check the wiring to your mass airflow sensor,
maybe try unplugging and reconnecting it. Try tapping gently on the sensor
housing while the car is running or while it's cutting out at 2000 rpm and
see if it has any effect.

Yes it is in safemode. Is the check engine light on? Have the OBDII read for
your next step. (Mine problem was exactly like yours and it was the MAS
Airflow sensor).

Go to to a junkyard and buy a used MAF mass airflow sensor. Pay about
$40-$50. The MAF is located in the plastic housing above the air
filter. When you get the used one, you will recognize where it goes by
comparing its shape to what you see in the engine compartment by the
air filter.
