I noticed my engine got hot today, sure enough, it needed water but the fans
werent running, while filling the radiator they kicked in, then shut down
again.  I turned on the AC but neither fan kicked in and it didnt get cool air
pumped out.  Its a 92 Stanza XE, 100k miles, 2.4 liter.  However the temp DID
return to normal.  Is it normal for the fans to shut down at times?  Please
let me know and thanks.

i believe that they are controlled by a
sensor and only come on when
they are needed .

You got half of your answer when you added coolant and the fans came on.
Temp sensors only work when IMMERSED in coolant.
