nissan sentra AC pressure switch removal?

I am working on a 1994 Nissan sentra where the AC is behaving
erratically.  After having a repair shop top off refrigerant (said it
was a little low) it is still doing the same thing.  Sometimes it
works for weeks on end, then other times it doesn't.  It may even go
through spells where it will cut on/off and just blow hot air, then 5
min later is working great.  All this leads me to think either the
pressure switch is bad or there could be a short in the wiring related
to the pressure switch....  Back to my original question.  On some
cars you can remove the pressure switch without discharging the AC.
Is this also true on the sentra?

I'm not sure if you need to discharge the system or not, check the FSM
which you can get from http://www.turbo6.net/vqtech/ESM/Nissan/Sentra/

It might be a problem with the A/C duct temp sensor as well, from what I've
heard they were a common failure in later models..  If it reports the A/C
air is colder than it is, it'll cut the compressor before you get any real
cooling.  In my 99 Altima it was behind the glove compartment, fit into a
hole in the HVAC ducting.

Check the fan speed switch.  I had the same issue but only with the
highest speed.  Removed the switch, cleaned the contacts and all is back
to normal.

The press switch does not work that often as to fail, though it could.

Good luck.

have u ruled out the AC relay?  the next time the problem occurs,
unplug the AC relay, tap it with a screwdriver handle several times,
plug it back in.  if it works, consider replacing the relay.

The problem is so intermittent I have not been able to isolate it for
a few weeks now.  I did start checking on the parts and am having
problems locating a low side pressure switch.  Napa is the only one
who thought they had it, but it was listed as "ac binary switch".
Auto zone, advance auto, and one other place didn't find anything at
all in their system.  Just to be sure I was talking about the right
part I went to a junkyard and pulled the whole thing out (accumulator/
pressure switch) out of a 1998 maxima.  The accumulator is not exactly
the same size, but the holes on the top for the ac lines and the
location of the pressure switch are.  At least now I can go back into
the shop and show them exactly what part I need.  :)  After pulling
the junkyard pressure switch out it did answer one of my questions
about losing all your freon.  At least for this model nissan it will
empty the system if you pull it out, so you will need to recover it
first.

I will also try the other two fixes with the fan speed switch and the
temp sensor.  Just haven't had that much time...

Thanks again for your assistance.

As far as i know, this car only has one pressure switch that cuts both
high and low pressure, and it is located on the receiver/drier, which by
the way, is on the high pressure line.

Try the fan switch fix.

Good luck!

Pulled the fan switch this morning and I think you may have nailed
it.  Need a little more time to be sure, but it was gunked up on the
4th fan speed contact and even felt a little odd while moving the
switch back and forth.  I was able to remove the switch and crack open
the case.  Some fine grain sand paper cleaned up the contacts.  Then a
little grease was applied to keep it from corroding.  Excellent
advice, as this is not one of the things I would have checked.

I hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

Good luck!
