we have a couple 06 Frontiers in the family and there is a small area behind
the rear door (4 dr model), on the fender of the bed which has a clear
see-through plastic "coating", about the size of the palm of a hand

my guess is, this small area is covered with this clearcoat (it's really
clear plastic, not paint clearcoat) to protect it against rocks or road
debris - but ultimate I was wondering where one may be able to buy more of
the same material?

already asked the dealer and their parts dept, they had no clue

it might be 3M paint protection film.
Google for their dealers in your area.

I suspect your dealer and the parts guy don't want to be bothered finding
out the part number.  My 06 Murano has the same thing on the forward edge of
the rear wheel well.  When I got the car (new), there was some minor paint
damage on one of the rear fenders.  The dealer sent the car to a body shop
for repair and when it came back, the plastic film was gone for the one
side.  The discrepancy was pointed out to the dealer and they kept the car
another day.  When I picked it up the next day, the replacement film was in
place.
