The temp gauge registers at halfway (normal), the upper radiator hose is hot
and lower hose is cold. I turn the temp up high and turn the fan on high -
but only cold air! Any help or suggestions will be most appreciated

Sounds like a thermostat to me .

Could be the coolant control valve - looks like a thermostat.

Replace the Thermostat.
The lower radiator hose should be warm compared to the hot upper hose,
not cold. Radiators are good, but not that good:)

Why does everyone automatically condemn the t-stat, a plugged radiator could
cause the same symptom.
hmmm, something to think about.

my altima was doing the same thing and after spending 175.00 fo
analysis and troubleshooting at the dealership determined that the tem
control gauge that is used to adjust from cold to hot - was stripped
Even though you turned the knob to hot (red) it was still blowing coo
air.
You have to take apart the display console and remove the entir
component
It could be that....

I agree it could be a clogged radiator, but in a 2002? Last year I
replaced the water pump in my 94 maxima and there was not a single trace
of rust or deposits in the cooling system.

Thanks to each of you - felt an update and report was in order It ends up
being air in the system. A neighbor had experienced the same thing on A
Volkswagen Vanagon a few years ago. After getting the air out of the
system gradually, refilling after each small trip and getting a new radiator
cap, the problem is solved and the heater works fine. thanks again to this
fine group.
