All surfaces when the brakes are applied cause the "crunching" /
ratcheting sound coming from the drivers side. This is on dry normal
surfaces. I pulled the VDC fuse and now it's OK. So this tells me the
car thinks every brake application is a skid. Where do I start ?
Sensor for the VDC system bad ? I know it uses the ABS to control
skidding .

Thanks in advance

Check the ABS sensors and the connectors. I have no specific model
info on your car (as in, there may be a known issue) but it's rarely a
major item in the ABS system... usually the sensors start feeding back
bad data.
