Hi,
I have a 96 Sentra 1.6 liter engine, automatic.
I thought I found my VSS, which was on the front of the trans, right
on the edge of the bell housing. One 10 mm bolt holding it in.
Removed it easily, and looked at it. It had no gear on it. It was just
a straight black plastic tube, with a small metal core to it.
I was expecting to see a gear on the end of it.
Is this the CPS ? (Crank Position Sensor?)
Where is the VSS ?? I know it is supposed to be "on the transaxle",
but what does that mean ? Near the firewall, on driver's side, on
top, under, etc. ????
I can't see anything else down there. I must be missing it.
Happy New Year,
Thanks

The pic in my Haynes manual shows a gear on it,a plastic gear....
there's also an O ring that needs to be replaced.
The ohms spec is 250 ohms, and should give a 0.5V pulse on AC range when
spun slowly.
I couldn't find a pic showing the location of it.

It may be;the VSS shows as a round bodied sensor, like a small motor, held on
by a Phillips screw, the CPS shows as being held on by a hex-head bolt,is a
smaller sensor, appears black.I believe the CPS also works magnetically. That
fits with what you describe.
the CPS is located on the edge of the bellhousing.

look for your VSS on top of the tranny underneath your intake manifold
on the driver's side... you'll need a good extension wrench to reach it.

Thanks, guys. I just went out with a flashlight and looked around on
top of trans, under intake man. Saw some connectors and some wires and
some brackets, but couldn't see any sensor-like objects, since
brackets hid everything. Will have to check again tomorrow in daylight,
reach back there, if possible, with the small mirror.
Thanks again.
