Just did the front brake pads and rotors on my 1997 Sentra 1.6L vehicle...
Who in the world designed the pads with those little springs... You have to
take the caliper partially apart, install the pads loose with the "springs
from Hell" already clicked in place and then try to re-assemble the caliper
while flexing the springs, anti-vibration housings, etc...
Jeez... I've done front pads on a Renault, Opel GT, Fiat, 1989 Sentra, 1988
Camry, 2001 Camry and a few drum brake nightmares... The drum brakes were
worse, but these darn things were a real pain!!!
I guess it would have been easier if the ground was dry and it wasn't
30something degrees outside too. :)
Anyhow... Happy new year to all.

Yeah,that's not fun.

hey,at least your caliper pins weren't frozen solid like mine were.
I had to replace the left-side caliper bracket, pins, and new boots.
(2003 SE-R SpecV)
But at least I got to work in fine weather;central Florida, home of the
Mouse. 8-)

Sounds like you got a lemon... I'll trade you my 1997 standard Sentra for
that trouble-ridden, non-gas efficient monster... er... vehicle. :)

Lemon;yes,maybe.
believe me,you wouldnt want it.I have a worn left lower ball joint,a bad
right CV joint, and CEL light with a fast idle code set.
there's also a [free] recall to have the ECM reprogrammed because the
engine just quits while driving.(that hasn't happened to me yet...)
The previous owner put in headers and exhaust,86'd the catalytic, cold air
intake,short-throw shifter,and lowering springs.
I've already had to replace a rear wheel bearing hub assy.
Lots of power, corners great, but hard on rough pavement.
And it has illegal "limo" tint, which I've gotten to like. 8-)
I'd say it was the second worst choice of used car I've ever bought.
(1st was a AMC Gremlin!) (oh,the shame...)

I could get a fortune for that car in Philly, Paterson, Newark, etc. It's a
highly desirable look in good condition compared to some vehicles I've seen
in those areas. All it needs is three-tone or more electric color paint.

That's why the industry created "parts changers" and technicians.
These words were told to me many years ago upon my entry to the automotive
industry from the aircraft industry.
Quote: " If it was easy, anyone could do it" ; "you have to be smarter than
it is"; "nuthin to it if you know what you are doing" and my all time
favorite "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
I've done more brake jobs on late 90's sentra's than I can count and have
never had a problem, never taken the caliper apart as you mention.
Also , I can complete a rear drum brake job in a matter of minutes , under
15 to be exact. It's all in having the correct tools and knowing what you
are doing .

I'll make you a deal... You come by here and change the front pads and
rotors on my 1997 Sentra without disassembly of the caliper as I stated and
I'll pay for dinner anywhere you want... AND pay you the $80/hr that a
"parts changer" or technician would charge me to do the job. No time limit
except that I had better have the car to use the next day.
Like I said, I've worked on many vehicles in the past and this is the first
time I came across this too... The little springs they use are somewhat
standard, but the way that the pads and springs had to be installed was a
bit strange for me.
It took me about 3 minutes to install them once I figured out the drill, but
it was counter-intuitive... And I didn't but the service manual yet. I
know... That's dumb in and of itself... :)
