2000 xterra miss fire when raining

Hi,

My xterra has developed a peculiar problem.  Whenever it rains it
starts to miss.  I start the car, everything seems to be fine.  As I
back out of parking spot, it starts to miss, badly. RPM drops every
1/2 second.  start to drive and it does get a bit more violent to the
point of the whole car shaking at the stop light.  After few miles
problem goes away right after "Service Engine Light" goes of 3 times.
Last time I've checked the codes it came up as knock sensor.

I was thinking of replacing knock sensor, but it's quite a project
since intake manifold has to come off along with bunch of other stuff
which doesn't seem like good idea just to try given the magnitude of
the procedure and not knowing whether it's the sensor that is at
fault.

This morning as I was going to work, same thing. So I pulled into a
gas station to see if any spark plug wires have cracks and shorting
out. Couldn't see any, however I have noticed small amount of mist on
the plug wire boots at the distributor cap.  Now there isn't even
enough water to get into a cap and cause miss, but I am thinking that
perhaps some connector in fuel, emission or ignition system is getting
water in and causes problems.  I am guessing if this is the case
connector would have to be located somewhere in the lower part of the
engine bay.

Anybody had this problem or have any suggestions on how I can trouble
shoot this?

Thanks,
Anton

Distributor caps are often susceptible to moisture causing misfire
during humid conditions.  Good luck.  Al

Next time it happens at night, pop the hood and look all around the high
voltage parts of the electric system for sparks and discharges. As you
suspected, it sounds like an electrical problem. Al suggested the
distributor cap, also check around the spark coil(s). Could be the problem
goes away after the engine heats up and dries off.

that's understandable if a plug or 2 are misfiring.

And a bunch of money. I'd do the plug wires first.

I suspect it's bad plug wires. Sometimes it's hard to see leakage from
them.Their insulation does degrade over time.I suppose you could spray WD-
40 on the wires(and cap) to displace any moisture,but that's a temporary
"fix" at best.

I'd check the spark plug condition at the same time as replacing the plug
wires.(one wire/plug at a time...)
I'd also use OEM for the distributor cap,not aftermarket parts.

Thank you all for replies.

2nd time this happened I pulled into a gas station to see if I can
spot any sparks it wasn't too bright out with the rain and all, but
dark enough to be able to spot any arks. Didn't see anything.

3rd time this happened check engine light came one and stayed on.  At
this point I went to autozone and picked up code reader.
Two codes were set P0306 and P0325 which are miss fire on #6 and knock
sensor error.  I've checked the wires, fairly new (I keep up with
maintenance). Poped the cap and contacts look white, kinda oxidized.
Gently cleaned them up with brass wire brush just enough to get the
residue off.  Contacts on the wires are ok.  Going to order new cap,
rotor, plugs and wires and see if this remedies the problem.

One thing that kinda sucks is knock sensor keeps throwing off the
P0325.  I've shut down engine, erased all codes. Read em again no
codes. Start the engine, read codes again and 2 P0325s are set.  Did
this a few times to make sure that my reader is not screwing up, same
thing.  Sure is great replacing it on V6.

I guess I can't really complain since the car has gone over 160k.

Thanks again!
Anton
