nissan micra wont start

my friend has just bought a uk.v reg nissan micra 16 valve
inspriation.
he said they where using the car yesterday when the engine managment
light came on .they got up this morning and the car wont start ,it
turns over no problem,loads of life in the battery,soon as you put the
key in and try to start it the e/m/light comes on and it wont start.i
took the airfilter off and put a bit of fule into the carb and it
fired up then died.took the ht lead and put it against the metal body
and turned it over and there was no spark .can anyone help me on what
to try next.

I'm not familiar with UK cars but I presume this is an older car since
you said it has a carburator.  You have two pieces of data that
contradict each other.  If pouring a little gas down the carb allows
the engine to start and run for a few seconds, then there is
definitely spark.  If there is indeed no spark, then putting gas in
the carb will do nothing.  The best way to determine if it has fuel is
to detach the fuel line going into the carb.  There should be fuel
spilling out when you unloosen it.  A lot of fuel should flow out of
it if you crank the engine while the line is detached.  If there's no
fuel present, you know it's a fuel delivery problem e.g clogged fuel
filter, bad fuel pump etc.  Good luck.  Al

I can confirm this car isnt carb'd.  It uses engine management with a
throttle body and MAF sensor.  No spark..  Sounds like it could be a NATS
(nissan anti theft system) issue to me.
