1987 Nissan Sentra, Lately after starting up my car and driving, I’ve noticed the brake light on the dash board has been coming on and off. Sometimes it stays on and sometimes it will suddenly go off. I haven’t noticed anything unusual about the way its handling, don’t seem to have a brake sticking. What could be causing this? The light refers to the parking brake. Try jiggling the parking brake lever when the light is on. SignatureBill In Hamptonburgh, NY in the original Orange County. What could be causing this? > You may also want to check the brake fluid level. Does the 87 Nissan have a sensor for brake fluid level? There's no other way for me to check if a low fluid level would light the indicator light unless I dump out some of the fluid. You have an an 87 Pulsar? So did I. I loved that car. 1.6 liter 4 cylinder, electronic carburetor, 35+ MPG, and could go over 100 MPH. When I first bought it I thought the speedometer came out of a Z. I did have it up to 115 mph one early Sunday morning on a freeway when there was no one around. One thing about it, the engine seems bullet-proof. I have corrosion problems and aligment problems (I need to practically replace everything suspension related), but that engine just keeps chugging along. Oops... a minor design flaw. I would of course check the hand brake and brake fluid level switches first... followed by a quick check of the alternator output by attaching a voltmeter to the battery while the engine is running. A reading between 13.5V-14.5V is normal.
