Hi everyone,
I have a 1995 pickup, 2.4 L 4-cyl, 101k miles, manual transmission
with a weird problem -- it idles either really low or really high, and
the check engine light comes on almost every time I stop. Sometimes I
can tap the throttle while stopped and get it to idle normally and get
the light to go off, but then it happens again at the next stop. The
light only comes on at idle and it goes off as soon as I pull away
from a stop.
The throttle also feels kind of touchy -- the truck lurches a bit when
I get on or off the accelerator but it runs fine at constant throttle,
like when I am at cruising speed on the freeway. Power and gas
mileage do not seem to be affected and it does idle smoothly, albeit
unusually low or high. It does not sound or feel like it is
misfiring.
The funny thing is that this all started a few days ago right before
my power steering drive belt broke. That belt has been replaced, as
well as a couple other belts that were starting to crack, but it still
is not running right. Coincidence? Beats me...
Has anyone ever seen something like this? Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks!

My Pathfinder was producing a similar problem with lurching, and it was
perished vacuum hoses.

It would certainly seem that cleaning the idle air control valve is in
order. I would expect the charge light to behave as you describe but
not the check engine light.
Good luck. Al
