"...runs on electricity produced by combining hydrogen with oxygen, and

There is just one problem with this model - where are they going to get the
hydrogen and oxygen? Oh, I know, they crack water for it. Good. Plenty of
water all over. And where does the energy to crack the water come from? Oh,
we use electrolysis. And where does the electricity to do so come from? We
burn fossil fuel in power plants. You know, coal and gas. Uh huh. We pollute
the air to make the hydrogen and oxygen, but that is OK because the car
itself does not pollute?
Hydrogen (and electric) cars are a stupid idea because even though they
don't pollute, generating the electricity to crack water to form their fuel,
or to charge their batteries, does.

Shell don't see Hydrogen being a market for many years.

energy/
So don't expect any more hydrogen fuel stations to be opening up any
time soon. If you run out then you can't get a fill up from a jerry
can but will have to have be put on truck and taken to the Hydrogen
filling station.
As filling stations are few and far between early users may be limited
to one locale. If it's not on run to / from work / shops but requires
a special out the way run to get fuel, then by forcing what is
basically an unnecessary journey it's an even higher waste of time,
money and energy.

Nuclear power stations + a bit of wind power + hydroelectric storage +
electric cars would appear to be the future as long as they can dig holes
deep enough to put the spent nuclear fuel in. The cars would have to only
use a few different battery types so that you can go into a 'petrol' station
and have a battery swapped rather than wait hours for it to charge. These
'petrol' stations wpuld have to have a LOT of batteries in stock though if
you think how many cars pull into a station now. Or I suppose a small
nuclear power plant in each vehicle, has a small one ever been made?

Ford had a concept nuclear powered car back in 1957, but it was never built.

Quite a few are in orbit.

Hydrogen powered cars are currently a net loss environmentally because
of this issue.

That was kinda my point...however, the greenies absolutely love the concept.
So do I, actually, except for the problem of producing hydrogen gas.
Maybe one day we will figure out how to control small scale fusion
reactions. While that still requires hydrogen (assuming we fuse H into He),
it requires very small amounts. And understanding that technology could lead
us to use other more plentiful materials. Hmm...maybe once we get the
reaction started, we can syphon off some of the energy to crack water for
more hydrogen to fuel the reaction? Then, we would truely have a car that
runs on water.
