i purchased a 94 nissan pathfinder within the past few months and im trying
to get it back to looking "factory" again or close to it. some idiot who
owned it before me decided to glue purple crushed velvet cloth all over the
interior with some kind of spray-on glue something like headliner glue, and
where cloth wasnt applied, they painted the plastic and vinyl parts with
some kind of anodized looking blue paint, it looked kinda cool and unique at
first but now it just all looks totally stupid. what was this guy before me
thinking? anyway, whats the best way to remove the paint without damaging
the parts and whats the best product to remove the glue that held down the
crushed velvet material? i experimented with soaking the plastic parts in
brake fluid (suggested by a friend of mine who uses brake fluid to soak
painted parts in restoration on model trains) to "melt" the paint, which
worked fairly well along with some scrubbing with a toothbrush but id need
about 3 gallons of brake fluid to do a thorough job. very time consuming and
tedious job. i also experimented with lighter fluid and "goo gone" on a rag
to remove the glue residue on the dash and other plastic and fabric areas
where the fabric was applied.
Anyone have any better ideas on how to remove the paint and glue
residue?......sorry post is so long.
please help.

Try mineral spirits, but test on a non-visable bit of vinyl first.
