Are there any tricks to replacing the front upper strut
mounts/bearings on a 2000 Alero?  Specifically, I can't loosen the
upper strut nut--I've got a 22mm cut out socket (from my VW days) and
can grip the top of the shock with a 10mm open-end wrench but once
I've run out of room, the nut/shock just spin.  No air tools
available.  Here's another fun question:  Can the upper strut nut be
removed with the car on the ground then jack up the car for quick
spring removal?  (yes I do have a spring compressor).

TIA!
Darryl.

you need to remove the strut first. then after the strut is removed
and the spring is compressed you can remove the nut

Thanks for the reply.

The assembly was removed from the car on the first attempt and the
spring compressed, etc.; however, I couldn't crack the polyurethane(?)
nut inserts by hand.  So, with the struts back in the car, I had a
shap remove and reinstall the nuts so on my second attempt, the nuts
came off with ease.

The question regarding the use of the car as a "spring compressor" is
a throwback to my VW days

Darryl.
