Hi, I own a 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme, 4 door, Front wheel Drive, 3.1
engine with 191+ thousand miles. Minor complaint, the turn signals are
very slow and usually have an interval of 3 or more seconds. Now the big
problems/worries, at around 189 thousand the security light came on,
around the same time my horn went from a nice loud horn to something of a
little Mr. bean type of noise, I don't know if the horn needs to be
repaired or if it is a power issue, the horn was never used that much so I
don't see why it would go so quick. Also just recently when I am driving
down the highway and I have cruise control set, the service engine soon
light will come on, but the cruise control continues functioning. And last
problem, about two years ago I had a automatic car starter with alarm
installed, when I was on my way to work this past weekend the alarm
started to sound. The car still functioned normally, but I had to turn of
the car, turn the alarm on then off to stop it. All of these problems seem
to be electrical problems and I am wondering if it is an easy fix or if I
should consider getting a new car. Engine runs fine, recently had to have
head gaskets replace and a rocker arm and push valve went but replaced,
A/C is beautiful, transmission feels a little shaky going from first to
second, but can tell it still has life left in it. Any in-site would be
greatly appreciated before having to result in another mechanic looking at
it and telling me things that are way off what I needed to hear.

Hi,

Sounds like the same problem I was having. Seems I replaced the
alternator and it works fine now. You can pick up a rebuilt alternator
for around $60. I replaced the alternator myself too. It sits right on
top and is super easy  to do. You can take it to a big shop and have
them test to see if the alternator is going out, but they need to check
the whole thing. Usually, they will do this free  to try and convince
you to hire them. I have the exact same car. I love mine and really
didn't want to get a new one.
