I took my car to have a oil change and 1200 miles later discovered that
what was in my engine didn't look, feel or smell like engine oil. I
suspect it was transmission fluid. The engine had developed a knocking
noise and I was told by the mechanic that it is a bad pulley. What can
happen now that it has been drained and oil put in it?

As long as it was some type of lubricating fluid (not antifreeze or water)
then you should be ok. I would recommend changing the oil every 500 miles or
so for the next 2000 miles to get the other fluid circulated out but it
should be fine

So what came out, was it red? Put the offending shop on notice if the engine
has problems it's there deal./
