I have a 1990 Oldsmobile cutlass cierra. Every once in a while, my
temperature light goes on, will stay on for a minute or two and then
shut off. It started about 3 weeks ago and has happened three times
since, but has never fully overheated. I want to do whatever checks
are necessary to find out WHY this light keeps going on.
+I put in coolant after this happens, and it seems to stop for a few
days. Every time I add more in, the plastic reservoir where I add it
is empty, is that supposed to happen and the coolant goes into the
system or should the plastic reservoir be full all the time as well?
+I dont see an apparent leak on either rad hose.
+The water pump is only four months old and is still working.
The fan was replaced about 14 months ago when it wouldnt turn on and
overheated then too. Could it be the newer fan too?
What/how could I go about assessing why the light turns on and off?

its obvious you have a leak somewhere. have you had a pressue check run on
your cooling system? when you check your oil is there any foam like
substance on the oil dip stick? if there is foam on the dipstick then you
may have a blown headgasket. i had the same problem on my olds aurora and
it happened to be a pin hole in the radiator. it was so small that it
wouldn't leak or show a leak even after driving. can you smell radiator
coolant after you have driven it a while? i have a feeling that you have a
blown head gasket.
