I have 2-1988 Delta olds. and both wiggles. After ripping down to the tilt
pins and lock-tightening them, when re-assembling,found that the wiggle
comes from the race on the bearing comming up off the seated area when the
column is pulled up,causing the race to lift off the bearing and allow the
movement in the wheel itself.Would anyone have had a simmilar exp.or is
the race to be pressed over the column a bit to hold it in place? any help
would be much appre.

What part of the wheel wigles? does it "wiggle" up and down. or does
the wheel rock side to side(can you turn the wheel before your tires
start to turn?). my achieva the tilt pins rattled them selves most of
the way out. to where i had to hold the wheel down to turn(i only
drove it home from school) all i had to do to fix it was take a small
hammer(i used a little plastic toy hammer)  and tap the pins back in.
if the wheel turns befor your tires you have worn out steering
linkage.

thank you for your reply.as i indicated the steering shaft even with the
steering wheel off can be pulled up about 1/4"and when this happens the
race which holds the steering shaft in line or from wiggling,is then up
off the bearings and has concidering amount of wiggle.i just cant seem to
get beyond this point as im not able to get anymore of the parts off which
may allow me to get at the bearings under this point of the mecanism.there
are two pivots on both sides of the tilt which actually is the tiling
point and they have small threaded holes which a bolt can go in which ive
been told may help remove mor parts however i cant seem to get them out.

I had to replace the switch in the steering column yesterday and
experienced the same problem.  After removing the split ring holding the
column lock the steering column dropped about 1/4 inch.  Now when we
pullit up the inner race of the bearing pulls out and leaves the whole
steering mechanism loose at the top.  Is there an adjustment lower down
that needs to be re-tightened?

Sorry ,I left the site after not getting any reply, but hope you got your
problem solve. What i found was the one cone type washer with the notches
in that face down then the spring went on.That cone washer had the notched
end some what compressed and that KEPT itfrom going that 1/4" down.Once i
spreed the nothed end out a bit it fitted over the steering column shaft
thet 1/4". (how simple)
