just changed the spark plugs and air filter on my 93 and it's running
really weird.  it starts up fine, idles good, but when i put it in gear
and start moving it is really hesitant.  i have to push down on the gas
quite hard to get moving, after it chugs and jerks a little bit it kicks
in and accelerates.  smells like it is running really rich and going
through more gas than usual.  i pretty much just use it to get back and
forth to work, only a couple of miles each way, so normally i can tolerate
it but if i stop somewhere in between it starts back up and continues to
run real roughly.  but if i let it sit for an extended period of time it
goes back to normal, well as normal as it can be expected.  also smoking
out the back pretty bad.  today exhaust was smoking after i'd turned it
off and gotten out of the car.anyone have any idea as to what it could be?

You might try removing the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and
see if it's got fuel in it.  The symptoms you have sound to me like the
diaphragm in the regulator has a hole in it.  That would dump excessive fuel
into the engine.  Hope this helps.

you may have also crisscrossed the spark plug wires.  try taking off 1 spark
plug wire and if it sounds better then i bet thats your problem  and as in
the previous check your vaccum hoses
