I have a 1987 Olds. I have dumped tons of injecter cleaner and gas line
dryer in it but it stills coughs and stalls. It doesn't do it all the time
or at the sametime. Sometimes it will go for days, sometimes as soon as you
start it. I replaced the fuel pump and the choke sensor, because it acts
like it is flooding out, when you drive down the hihgway it coughs and
jerks and pours out black smoke. Help Please

hmm.. why don't you check the air mass sensor or the intake manifold
gasket.

I'll second (and even third) Vince's comment on the Mass Airf Flow
sensor. Those external AC-Delco MAFs used in the mid-80s are a KNOWN
sore spot. On my 87 Olds 98 I ended up replacing the MAF about every 5
years.  Even GM has admitted in various TSPs that those MAFs have a
problem.

One check that can be done to see if the MAF is weird is to LIGHTLY
tap the MAF right above the connector with the handle end of a
screwdriver. Notice I said :LIGHTLY!! If the engine coughs or idle
speed shifts or if all of a sudden the engine starts running right,
you've got a bad MAF.

ALSO, it is important that you have no air leaks in the hose or
couplings between the MAF and the engine. Any air that enters between
the MAF and the engine is unmeasured and WILL screw up the ECM's
calibration of the A/F ratio.
