I've read that the oil changes must be done by a dealer because of the type
of oil filter...is this true?  If not, is there anything special I need to
know about doing it myself?

Not true.  The problem, however, is the lube shop to have the filter.
I just bought a couple of them at AutoZone and left them in the trunk
for the next oil change.

You will also need an 80 mm end cap style oil filter "wrench" with 15
flutes.  This is the type that snaps onto a 3/8" ratchet.  This wrench
allows you take off the access cap for the filter element.

Besides the filter element, a special tool is required to remove the housing
of the element.
