I have tried in vain to get this problem solved, and I have finally
decided to try the vast knowledge of other Olds owners.
I have a 1985 Cutlass Ciera 3.0L 2bl carb with 40,000 original
miles(literally owned by a old lady). When I received it, I replaced
the sparkplugs, fuel filter, & added a re-usable hi flow air filter.
Soon afterward, I noticed that I started needing to apply gas pedal
during starts, where as before, the car started up with just pressing
down the pedal, and letting up and starting like the instructions on
the visor said. When I apply gas, it takes about ten seconds "catch",
before I can take my foot off the gas. I also get a good amount of
smoke. It also revs down to almost a stall out and then surge when left
at idle for longer than 1-2 minutes. I cleaned out the carb, checked
all the hoses under the hood, and decided that maybe the fuel filter
was bad again because the car had sat for a few months before I got it.
I changed it, same problem, so then added in a puroleter in line
filter(the glass kind you can see thru). Still continued.
So now, I have this weird check engine light problem. If I am
traveling at about 60+ miles an hour for a few minutes, I sometimes
(more often than not) get a check engine light. If I keep up the
speed, it stays on. But if I back off the gas a little, and then
re-apply, it goes off. It will also go off if I let the car slow to
about 50-55.
I haven't tried to pull the engine code, because #1, I'm a little
afraid to try, and #2, I commute to work, and don't have much of a
chance to get to a mechanic except for the occasional weekend oil
change at a local garage that doesn't require appts for it. But before
I take a daty off to bring it in, I wanted some opinions as to what it
may be from some people who have olds experience. Any help you can
offer will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

First you need to find out what the CEL code is, there are too many
possibilities to give any accurate advice without onsite diagnosis here.

Thank you Shep. I think I will try to pull the engine code this
weekend. I just hope the answer is in one of the repair manuals I
bought. On a side note, it always amazes me that the info in these
books is so different. I have a Haynes and a Chilton manual I bought
when I first got the car just in case I needed it one day. Haynes says
I have a rear wheel, and the Chilton says front wheel (I have a front
wheel). Chilton's doesn't acknowledge my engine VIN(E), but Haynes
does. I went through the Chilton Manual twice trying to find how to
pull the codes, but while they reference code #'s, they don't say how
to get them. I left the Haynes at home, so maybe I'll find it tonight.

Shep,
Before I puled the codes, I decided to clear them out first and wait
for the light to come on again. So I unplugged the battery, and lo and
behold, the light has not been seen since. I hope i didn't burn out
the bulb. Is there a check engine light light?
I did recently change the o2 sensor, both fuel filters, the PCV valve,
the valve gasket, and I was gonne change the spark plug wires, BUT....
I went to Autozone instead of NAPA and of course, the plug wires they
gave me at Autozone didn't fit because they need to have a button on
top for the retainer ring on the distributer.
