Hi everyone! Hopefully there is someone out there who can help me. I
own a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. Believe me its a piece of junk!!!! Ever
since I had it I have had nothing but problems and all of the problems
I have had all have been recalls from Oldsmobile after I have fixed
them. And so the story continues with my crappy olds. Now the
transmission is shot! I took it to 2 good transmission shops and they
both say the same thing. I need to have my transmission rebuilt or just
put a brand new one in. Okay first question. Can anyone tell me if I
can rebuild or change the transmission myself? What would be involved?
Would I need a cherry picker? Can anyone refer me to information on how
to rebuild this transmission. I really hope someone can help. The blue
book value is only 3500.00 for my car and the cheapest place I found to
work on my transmission is 1600.00. I am thinking this is almost not
worth it but I just dont have the cash right now to get a better car so
hopefully I can do this on my own. Thanks Alot!

First, I'm not a mechanic or expert, just a guy like you who owns an Alero,
and would be quite frustrated by this.

When I first bought my Alero, one of the first things I did was buy a Haynes
manual for it.  It is cheap, but generally tends to lay out pretty well what
one can and cannot do, based on their instructions.

The most likely option they will give you is, rather than rebuilding the
transmission yourself, to consider buying a rebuilt transmission that you
put in yourself (like buying a rebuilt engine).  A good web search can give
you some quotes.  That would be MUCH easier to put in and take out.  A
Haynes manual's step-by-step instructions seem to be QUITE good on how to do
it.

Is the Alero worth it???????  You have to decide.
