Recently, the theft lock system for the radio in my '01 Alero came on
disabling the entire radio and all buttons. I  believe that the display on
the front indicated theft lock. After turning the car off and back on again,
the radio seemed to work. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?
Is there an easy fix type of solution or does the car have to be taken to
the dealer for repair?

There is a procedure that involves entering in a part of the vehicle's VIN
into the radio if it "Theftlocks."

But I have never been able to find out which part, how much of it, or how to
do it.  A good friend at any GM dealer should know (and hopefully wouldn't
charge you for such knowledge).

Hope this helps.

If the radio has never been taken out or modified, why would it go into the
theft lock mode?

Top posted  for your convenience:

"Maybe so he could repaint all the numbers and letters that came off the
buttons?"
